Come and Try Croquet - Free Coaching Available
The McIlwraith Croquet Club invites anyone interested to try
the game of Croquet - an easy social game for people of nearly all ages and levels of ability.
Simply call Sandy on 3870 3771 to make an appointment.
Croquet is a very reasonably priced sport to play.
At Mcilwraith our single membership fees are $380 per annum (2015-16 season). Members do not pay green fees.
The club has mallets for new members to use until they know what suits them. New mallets are priced around $200 - $600.
The only other things you need to play are flat soled shoes, a sun hat
and a good sunscreen. We also recommend you drink plenty of water.
About the Club
Croquet Club was established in 1923 after the land was bequeathed to
the Town of Toowong by Lady Harriette Ann McIlwraith (2nd wife of Sir
Thomas McIlwraith, Premier of Queensland, who served 3 terms between
1879 and 1893). It was donated for recreational purposes only. We are
not sure of the origin of the clubhouse, club records were destroyed in
the 1974 flood when the entire building was submerged to the gable
Women Only Club until 1946
Males were not allowed to join the club until 1946.
Clubhouse has been completely renovated following the Jan 2011 floods
when more than 15 feet of water covered the lawns and clubhouse.
Renovations were carried out with grants from the Queensland
Government, The Brisbane City Council, local businesses and community
support. We now boast first class facilities for members and visitors.
The club is once again a great venue for functions and celebrations.
Visiting Croquet players are welcome at McIlwraith either from other local clubs or those visiting Brisbane.
Please feel free to join us on any member playing day and meet the friendly locals!
