It was a very special moment at our AGM on Saturday 29 August when Peter Nicholson was awarded Life Membership of McIlwraith Croquet Club — one of the highest honours our Club can bestow. 

Peter’s contribution to McIlwraith and to the sport of croquet has been remarkable.

A wonderful playing career
Peter first came to croquet through the Learning for Leisure program and went on to become an accomplished and highly respected competitor. He has represented Queensland, competing in both singles and doubles, played in the Queensland Open Singles, and competed at State, National and World Championship level, including World Championships in New Zealand in 2015 and Melbourne in 2017. 

A coach, mentor and encourager
Peter has generously shared his knowledge and experience with other players over many years. His approach to the game is perhaps best summed up by the advice for which he has become famous at McIlwraith:

“Go the hoop!”

Bold, brave and positive — very much Peter’s style of croquet, and the way he has encouraged so many others to play.

The Peter Nicholson Bucket, our competition for players with handicaps of 9 and above, was named in his honour and reflects something Peter has always valued: encouraging newer and emerging players to have a go, enjoy competition and build their confidence. 🏆

Always willing to lend a hand
Peter’s contribution has extended well beyond the lawns. He has been a wonderful supporter of our fundraising functions and has always been ready to put his hand — and his mallet! — up to help, sharing his enthusiasm for croquet with the many guests who come through our gates.

Life Membership recognises more than sporting achievement. It recognises sustained service, generosity, commitment and a contribution that has helped shape the life and character of our Club. Peter exemplifies all of these qualities.

Peter now joins our other distinguished Life Members — past presidents Sandy Ridgway, Penny Jackson and Major Jill Whitehouse — in receiving this very special honour.
